Striders Social and Cultural Organization
The concept to form a club originated with the young people of Brighton/Belvedere/Prospect/Diamond Junction. The main objective was to channel the energy and enthusiasm of the young people into positive directions for their own benefit as well as that of the community. The concept, along with aims and objectives, were presented to many other young people who willingly embraced them. STRIDERS CULTURAL & SOCIAL CLUB became a reality. It was March 28, 1967, the date of our first meeting, we were graced with the presence of(Mr. Edgerton Richards, who addressed us, sharing the wealth of his experiences. The emphasis was on community involvement. As it is, with young people through the ages, we had enormous energy, coupled with a strong desire to utilize our usefulness and value and to show our “critical adults” that we were prepared to give of ourselves to the community.
STRIDERS organized and participated in: tutoring children and adults at the Brighton Methodist School; clean-up of the Brighton cemetery; started clean-up of the public areas of the community’s much loved “Salt Pond Beach” fund raising via community Christmas caroling and subsequent distribution of Christmas hampers to needy families in the area, participation in sports leagues in cricket, soccer and track. We live in and subscribe to our new and varied environments, earning and contributing as best as we can. Our ties with our community may have been weakened but never severed.
